It may be as American as apple pie, but make no mistake: advocacy is a full-time job. Though it may begin as that most noble of civic acts-telling representatives what a community needs-a simple request can quickly escalate. Steady contact needs to be established with legislators. Friends and neighbors need to be recruited to the cause. Mailers need to be sent, ads place, and newspapers contacted. Simply put, grassroots organizing is work. It requires energy and focus, ads well as a gift for communicating complex ideas in a clear way.
